Relationships Among Udder Traits and Milk Production in Unimproved Awassi Sheep
Birol Dag,Ugur Z?lkadir
Journal of Animal and Veterinary Advances , 2012,
Abstract: Udder characteristics and their relation to milk production were studied in a flock of unimproved Awassi sheep (n = 583) raised in G?zl? State Farm. All udder traits were recorded following the onset of residual suckling regime (34 ? 5 days) concurrently with the first milk recording (41 ? 5 days). Age effects were not significant for all traits. Udder type affected only front udder depth (P< 0.05). Effects of ewes lambing date were not significant for all traits except for the left teat length.Milk production traits were not affected by udder types. Positive and significant phenotypic correlations were observed among commercial milk yield and udder traits (P< 0.01 and P< 0.05). The phenotypic correlation coefficients among udder traits were varied from – 0.08 to 0.95. Four udder types were determined. Cylindirical udder with high and horizontal-set teats was the most common udder type (74.18 %). Udder type had a significant effect on mastitis frequencies (P< 0.01). Udder with oblique and high-set teats was found to be inclined to mastitis.

Journal of Animal and Veterinary Advances , 2012,
Abstract: This study was carried out to investigate the relationship between reproductive traits and milk yield traits of Brown Swiss herd by using canonical correlation analysis. Data collected for 185 Brown Swiss cows, maintained at the state farm of Konuklar in Konya province. One of the set (Y set) was consisted of reproductive traits that were gestation period (GP), first service age (FSA), first calving age (FCA), service period (SP), calving interval (CI), number of insemination per (NIPC) and the other set (X set) was constituted of lactation milk yield (LMY) and lactation length (LL). The first canonical correlation coefficient between the two sets was 0.625 (P<0.01) and the second was 0.225 (P>0.01) respectively.

Notes on Constitutional Endurance  [PDF]
Dag Anckar
Beijing Law Review (BLR) , 2014, DOI: 10.4236/blr.2014.51007
Abstract:

Among the countries of the world there are great differences in terms of constitutional endurance, i.e. the life span of national constitutions. Exploring these differences the literature in this field has observed associations between democracy and constitutional survival, and this article contributes in the form of a case study to the still somewhat fragmentary evidence for a correlation. Investigating a set of countries composed of former British colonies, the study shows that clearly more than semi-democratic and non-democratic colonies, the democratic colonies have been during independence endurance guardians. However, the good endurance record may follow from the fact that more than other states democracies change their constitutions by means of individual amendments to constitutional texts rather than by constitutional turnover. There is therefore a need for future endurance studies to probe deeper into the amendment institution. Of several other endurance aspects that are brought to the fore in the study, one is about regional differences and particularly about the case of Africa, which stands out as a place for an ongoing vast constitutional muddle and reshuffle. Indeed, of more than 80 constitutions introduced in the world in the 1990s, no less than 38 were adopted by African states. Since several of these transitions have implied a rejection of one-party rule and one-party elections and a growing acceptance of competitive elections, the African endurance gap may in the long run prove beneficial to political development.

Constitutional Amendment—The Proposal Stage  [PDF]
Dag Anckar
Beijing Law Review (BLR) , 2017, DOI: 10.4236/blr.2017.81004
Abstract: Studies of the rigidity of constitutional amendment often focus on formulas that are applied in the final stages of amendment, stating that amendments must be decided by a two-thirds parliamentary majority, by a three-fourths majority, by referendum, by a combination of several such prescriptions, and so forth. However, much can probably be added to our knowledge of rigidity causes and consequences by expanding research to cover other decision stages, like the proposal stage, which conveys the right of constitutional amendment initiative on specified actors and institutions. While several countries do not in their current constitutions regulate the constitutional amendment proposal stage, initiative prescriptions are in fact given in a majority of the constitutions of the countries of the world, the precise number being 111. The number is impressive and certainly suggests that the proposal stage merits comparative study and examination. Initiating such examination, a preliminary empirical investigation of initiative clauses in 40 selected countries suggests that accounting for initiative rigidity makes in many cases a difference that alters the rigidity profiles that emanate from more traditional approaches to rigidity; in consequence, measurements of constitutional rigidity should preferably observe not only the decisive amendment stage but also include methods that are used for proposing amendments.
Pea3 transcription factor promotes neurite outgrowth

Frontiers in Molecular Neuroscience , 2014, DOI: 10.3389/fnmol.2014.00059
Abstract: Pea3 subfamily of ETS transcription factors consist of three major proteins, Pea3, ERM and ER81. Although important for many different tissues that exhibit branching morphogenesis, the function of Pea3 family in nervous system development and regeneration is only beginning to unfold. In this study, we provide evidence that Pea3 can directs neurite extension and axonal outgrowth in different model systems, and that Serine 90 is important for this function. We have also identified neurofilament-L and neurofilament-M as two putative novel targets for Pea3.
Cystic Tumours of the Pancreas – a Rare and Diverse Type of Tumours  [PDF]

Journal of Cancer Therapy (JCT) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/jct.2012.34032
Abstract: Objective: Increasing incidence of non-inflammatory cystic lesions of the pancreas challenges work-up algorithms, surgery and surveillance. We have reviewed our experience with these tumours in accordance with International Consensus Guidelines and evaluated the outcome. Patients and Methods: From 1999 to 2009, 34 cases referred to Haukeland University Hospital were operated upon; ten were serous (SCN), twenty-one IPMNs, one MCN, and two solid pseudopapillary neoplasms (SPPN). A thorough medical history was supplemented by CT, MRI, and US before each case were discussed in a MDT to decide on the best subsequent care. Results: All SCN and SPPN patients had benign histopathology, and no deaths were reported. Survival for malignant IPMN was, 2 years: 75%, and 5 years: 67%, where after no deaths were registered in the observation period. Presence of jaundice had the highest impact on survival (p = 0.0009), followed by weight loss (p = 0.005) and dilatation of the common bile duct (p = 0.04). In the IPMN group two had pancreatic juice leakage, and reoperation was performed in one. Conclusions: All SCN turned out benign which justify a high threshold for resection unless unacceptable symptoms dominate. For branch duct IPMNs resections of asymptomatic and smaller lesions (<3 cm) should be avoided but kept under surveillance, whereas symptomatic and lager lesions together with main duct IPMNs lodge a substantial malignant potential and should be resected. Symptomatic or large SPPNs can be, or turn, malignant which require resection.
Volatility Spillover from Oil to Food and Agricultural Raw Material Markets  [PDF]

Modern Economy (ME) , 2011, DOI: 10.4236/me.2011.22011
Abstract: The upward movement in oil and food prices in the 2000s has attracted interest in the information transmission mechanism between the two markets. This paper investigates the volatility spillover between oil, food consumption item, and agricultural raw material price indexes for the period January 1980 to April 2008. The results of the Cheung-Ng procedure show that variation in oil prices does not Granger cause the variance in food and agricultural raw material prices. Since there is no volatility spillover from oil markets to food and agricultural raw material markets, investors can benefit from risk diversification. However, there is bi-directional spillover between agricultural raw material and food markets.
Exorphins in urine from schizoaffective psychotics  [PDF]

Open Journal of Psychiatry (OJPsych) , 2012, DOI: 10.4236/ojpsych.2012.23029
Abstract: Hyperpeptiduria and opioid excess have been reported in schizophrenia. According to Prof. Dr. L. Lindstrom, Sweden opioids may explain the patho-physiology of this syndrome. Therefore it is critical to elucidate the presence and nature of opioids in schizophrenia and diagnostic sub groups. First morning urine from untreated schizoaffective patients (ICD-10: F 25.1) was separated on HPLC and peaks that elute where different opioid standards appear, freeze dried, re-dissolved in methanol/water (50/50) and 10mM formic acid. Mass spectrometry and MS/MS or fragmentation mass spectrometry was performed. We found fragmentation pattern of beta-casomorphin 1-3 and 1-4 (bovine) identical to synthetic standards from Bachem. The aggregation tendency of peptides was much in evidence. The reported exorphins were found in the urine from 8 of 12 untreated schizoaffective patients.
Lack of patients? – a hypothesis for understanding discrepancies between hospital resources and productivity
Dag Bratlid
BMC Health Services Research , 2006, DOI: 10.1186/1472-6963-6-42
Abstract: Resource allocation and patient volume was analysed during the period 1995 to 2001. Data were analysed both for emergency and elective admissions as well as outpatient visits specified into new referrals and follow-up consultations.Full time employee equivalents for doctors and nurses increased by 36.6% and 25.9%, respectively, and all employees by 28.1%. However, admitted patients, outpatient consultations and surgical procedures only increased by 10%, 15% and 8.3%, respectively. Thus, the productivity for each hospital employee, defined as operations pr. surgeon, outpatient consultations pr. doctor etc. was significantly reduced. A striking finding was that although the number of outpatient consultations increased, the number of new referrals actually went down and the whole increase in activity at the outpatient clinics could be explained by a substantial increase in follow-up consultations. This trend was more evident in the surgical departments, where some departments actually showed a reduction in total outpatient consultations. In view of the slow increase in hospital activity in spite of a significant increase in resources, it can be speculated that patient volume might be a limiting factor for hospital activity. The health market (patient population) might not be big enough in relation to the investments in increased production capacity (equipment and manpower). The Norwegian National Health Service has the last years been through a period of substantial growth. The Health Service's share of the gross national product increased from 8.2 to 9.5 percent during the period 1995–2004 [1]. When health care costs are calculated in USD and corrected for purchasing power, only United States and Switzerland have higher health care costs than Norway [1]. However, while government spending on health care is only 44% in the U.S., and 54% in Switzerland, 84% of health care in Norway is covered through tax revenues.Norway has a rather healthy population of 4.6 million peopl
